Joota Chupai Or Stealing Shoes Tradition In Indian Wedding

Sunday, June 20, 2010

Stealing shoes or Joota Chupai tradition is one of the popular tradition in Indian Wedding. This tradition starts before Mangal Phera when the groom (Dulha) going to sit for Phera, he takes off his shoes. At that point, brides sisters (Saaliyan) steal the shoes of groom and return them for some money called Nake. And the fun starts when groom's brothers hide the shoes before the tradition, and at the same time the bride's side has to try their best to get the shoes and hide them.

This tradition is not just about money, but the fun that comes along with the tradition. To better understant the tradition watch this video from the movie Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and see how Madhuri and her friends hide the shoes in a box of sweets. And how they are negotiating with groom side or Salman Khan friends.
